This Wormy World: An atlas of helminth infection
There are no precise figures, as data are not collected routinely, but current estimates are that at least one-quarter of the world's population is infected with intestinal parasites!
To be able combat and control these parasites it's vital to have an understanding of the geographical distribution of infection. Reliable and updated maps of worm infection distributions are essential to target control strategies to those populations in greatest need. Simon Brooker and his team are creating a series of FREE to use maps - using published and non-published data - to address the scarcity of geographical information on helminth risk.
The atlas will provide the most reliable, up-to-date and comprehensive source of data on the distribution of common helminth infections to guide the rational implementation of control efforts.
A challenge for us will be how to present and structure the web site so that it is easy for users to download the maps and so that it can evolve as more countries and diseases are added to the atlas's portfolio.
